What do you know about Iraqi Jews? Maybe you enjoy eating amba and sabih? Perhaps you have heard of the tragedy of the Farhud? Or watched the film adaption of Eli Amir’s book Dove Flyer?

This talk will bring all of these facets of the Iraqi Jewish experience together through an exploration of the cosmopolitan culture of the modern Baghdadi Jew, Baghdadi Jewish networks, the vibrant culture of the Middle East in the first half of the 20th century and the rise of Arab nationalism.

GOLDSTEIN-SABBAH is the digital curator for the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam and the Jewish Heritage Network. She has contributed to and edited numerous works on Middle Eastern and North African Jewry, including her new release and Modernity, Minority, and the Public Sphere: Jews and Christians in the Middle East.

MODERATOR MAURICE SHOHET is Managing Editor of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy’s Arabic-language website, President of World Organization of Jews from Iraq, and a Sephardic Heritage International in DC (SHIN-DC) Board Member. Maurice is also an Iraqi Jew, born and raised in Baghdad. His personal family history is represented in the Iraqi Jewish Archives.
